Caffery/McCaffery Family of Glasgow
« on: Wednesday 14 February 18 21:55 GMT (UK) »
Hello

My 2xgreat aunt Mary Ann Casey was born on 13 April 1860 in Co Armagh to Francis Casey and Mary Gollogy she married John James Caffery/McCaffery in Co Armagh in 1880

They had six children all born in Co Armagh
Thomas Francis- 1883
Patrick - 1885- 7 Feb 1886 Died in Co Armagh
Bridget - 1887 -
Margaret - 1891 -
Ellen - 1893-
Catherine- 1895-

I am not sure when the family moved to Glasgow however John James came back to Dorsey, Co Armagh to purchase land for the family to move back to Ireland however during his visit he died as a result of carbon dioxide his address was listed as:
11 Tennant Street, Glasgow

Thomas Francis came back to Co Armagh in 1921 and married Margaret Ellen Bennett
His address was still listed as:
11 Tennant Street
His sister Catherine McCaffery was a witness at the marriage

I can't find the family in the census of Ireland for 1901 so they must of been in Glasgow at that stage

I have try to find them on Scotland people on the census records and have not had much luck
So I was wondering if anyone could help me find them, also when did Mary Ann died and what happen to her

Many Thanks to anyone for information :)

Hi there.

The 1905 Valuation Rolls show that 11 Tennant Street is multi occupancy (a tenement most likely). Showing in the listing is a John MACCAFFERTY, tenant. Also a Charles MACLAFFERTY (could he be connected and name indexed differently?).

Searching the 1901 census by address, I can't see John and family but Charles is there (if it help you to check whether he is connected):

Charles Mclafferty 34 Fitter's Lab b. Ireland
Margaret Mclafferty 32 b. Ireland
John Mclafferty 10 b. Glasgow
Jane Mclafferty 3 b. Glasgow
Margaret Cocharine 33 boarder
William Berry 25 boarder
Michael Kelly 22 boarder

Address: 11 Tennant St, Glasgow/St Rollox

Charles shows at this address on the 1895 Valuation Rolls.

Had John died by 1915? Mary shows as Mrs Mary MACCAFFERY, tenant at 11 Tennant Street in the 1915 - 1935 Valuation Rolls. The last Valuation Rolls available online are for 1935. It gives a date to start searching for a possible death for her. Have had a quick look for her death on www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk but haven't yet seen anything likely for her.

Hello,

My grandfather was Thomas McCaffrey and he married Margaret Ellen bennett. They lived in Glasgow (Kennedy street - glebe street) they had 7 children:
Dennis - died at 1 (TB)
John Desmond - died at 19 (stabbed)
Mary Ellen - died at 16 (TB)
Thomas joseph - died in his 70 (5 children)
Eugene - died at 59 (3 children)
Sheila - died at 14 (TB)
Philomena - died at 4months (TB)

Margaret McCaffrey died in1958 - not sure about Thomas. The names are spelt differently, but it’s too much of a coincidence.

Welcome to RootsChat, Josephine.

I can't find a marriage of a Thomas *c*f*r*y to a b*n*t* in the marriage indexes at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk.

Nor is there a death of a Eugene Caffrey or McCaffrey aged 59.

There is a record of a John Desmond McCaffrey, aged 19, in 1951 in Glasgow Townhead. There is no birth of a John Desmond *c*f*r*y in 1930-1933.

There are a birth in 1929 and death in 1930 of a Philomena McCaffrey in Glasgow St Rollox.

a 14-year-old Sheila McCaffrey died in Glasgow Possilpark in 1943. There is no birth of a Sheila Caffrey or McCaffrey in 1927-1930.

So it looks as if the family moved to Glasgow around 1930. The obvious place to look for them before that is in Ireland.

Sure enough, Thomas McCaffery and Margaret Bennett were married in the district of Newry and Mourne in County Down, Northern Ireland, on 20 July 1921. You can view their marriage certificate at modest cost at https://geni.nidirect.gov.uk/

You can also view birth certificates over 100 years old, marriage certificates over 75 years old, and death certificates over 50 years old at even more modest cost at www.scotlandspeople.gov.uk
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.

Hi,

Thomas McCaffrey and Margaret Bennett we’re married in Armagh so there will be no record on Scottish people.

My father - Eugene died in Northern Ireland (married in Ireland).

Most of the birth registrations are in st rollox and death in a district called pollispark.

When I was younger we visited dorsey in Armagh to meet my fathers family.

John Desmond died in 1941.

I have highlighted the family -see attached.
