Malims, or variants of the spelling, in Hertfordshire c 1830-1860
« on: Wednesday 14 February 18 23:55 GMT (UK) »
Hi, am trying to trace my paternal great grandmother. She was born in Ayott  St Peter, Hertfordshire around 1858.She married Robert PEAT in 1878 in County Durham. In all the census records she calls hersely Mary Jane, but her marriage certificate states her name as Mary Ann LORD otherwise MALIM.  Her father is named John MALIM but the name Joeph L also appears and has been crossed out and signed by the registrar. I assume the L to mean Lord. It was written before it was realised that he wasn't her actual father. It also states ather is deceased. Its definitely the correct marriage certiicate for my relatives, but it's a real puzzler. I wonder if there is anyone who has come accross MALIMS in Hertfordshire, or indeed any varints on the name. She had to make her mark, so with her southern accent and inability to spell correctly there are lots of margins for error on the recording of her name by the registrar!

The GRO's own index (which shows mothers maiden names) has the following birth in Hatfield (regn. district for Ayot St Peter):

Mary Jane Malam   Mar.qtr.1860 mmn Lord

This must surely be her although I can't find her on 1861/1871 census.

This looks like the birth of her first son, born before her marriage:

John Malam Lord, no mmn, born March quarter 1878 in Durham.

Added:
Do all her children show her maiden name as Lord?

You need to get her birth certificate for names of parents to help find her.

Have you found the family in 1911?

There is an interesting lodger living with them who may be related, or it could be coincidence?

What was her address on marriage certificate and witnesses to marriage?

I note that in 1881 Robert and Mary Peat are living in Coxhoe, there is also this Lord family headed by a Joseph:

Slightly confusing family which I can't find in 1871
Younger daughters Clara and Elizabeth, as well as a John b. 1872 d. 1873, have mother's maiden name Blow
"Sarah Lord" born Leeds aged 2 is possibly actually an illegitimate granddaughter? born with mother's maiden name also Lord.

This looks like Joseph Lord in 1891, with different wife, and daughter Dinah with mmn Blew not Blow
Living at Trimdon Collery, Trimdon, Stockton, Sedgefield
Joseph Lord   50 Fleetwood
Hannah E Lord   41  Hanley Staffs
Sarah Lord   12  Leeds
Dinah Lord   9  Kelloe

You appear to have suggested that birth 6 years ago (but without access to the extra information that the mmn was showing as Lord) - time to get the certificate?

There are various trees on Ancestry, one suggesting death in 1933 so this:
Deaths December quarter 1933 Mary J Peat age 74 in Durham

Robert and son Robert appear to be together in 1939 free register in Durham

Continuing on with Joseph Lord, the wife he was with in 1891 (Hannah Eliza Lord nee?) passed away in 1898 and by 1901 he seems to have remarried to a Margaret:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:XSC3-XF6

I can find the marriage to the 1901 Margaret (Margaret McDonald, in 1898), but not to Hannah Eliza or to Margaret Blow/Blew.  The 1898 marriage gives his father as William:
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXPD-M1M

I can't imagine it's a coincidence that he shows up in the same area as Mary Jane Malam/Lord, but what the relationship is (stepfather, uncle, biological father?) is unclear.

Yes, I have also been looking for more information on Joseph Lord.

Hope that the birth certificate in Hatfield will be accessed.
