Coulsdon and Purley, 1939 Register
« on: Thursday 15 February 18 06:54 GMT (UK) »

I have found someone in 1939 Register, living in an institution, address simply given as Coulsdon and Purley.  She is a patient, formerly lady's maid. Approx 180 female patients listed, no staff listed.

Any suggestions as to where this would be?

I'd go with Cane Hill, which was a large psychiatric hospital in Coulsdon. If you look at the list of people they all have "formerly" before their occupations even some of the younger ones.

Quote
Shortly before WW2 the Hospital had 857 male and 1,290 female patients

It wasn't either of the main Croydon workhouses as they were in Croydon itself - Queens Road (later became a geriatric hospital) and Mayday ( now Croydon University Hospital).

Thanks for all your replies.

I did have her death registration. I see that Surrey Mid Eastern includes Coulsdon, she may have died in hospital.

I'll see if I can find any men or other women in Coulsdon and Purley, only 180 patients in this 'block', should be a lot more. The address and staff may be in other 'blocks'.

Thanks again, Margaret
