Immigration from England to Australia, what records available?
« on: Friday 16 February 18 19:42 GMT (UK) »
My relative was last seen unmarried in England in 1891.  The next sighting is in Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1900 where she is married and named on her son's birth certificate.

I can not find a marriage record in either England or Australia.  I have searched many passenger lists and I have found nothing.

What records should I be checking to find about her immigration to Australia?

What age do you have for relative, 1891, England?

The birth certificate, QLD, 1900, would ask for marriage details and previous issue which would be useful to you.

"..Brisbane, Queensland, Australia in 1900 where she is married.."
Do you know that she is married, or are you assuming this from the birth entry in QLD BDM index?

The National Archives of Australia site is always a good place to start.  You can search for arrivals.

James -Victoria, Australia originally from Keynsham, Somerset.
Janes - Keynsham and Bristol area.
Heale/Hale - Keynsham, Somerset
Vincent - Illogan/Redruth, Cornwall.  Moved to Sculcoates, Yorkshire; Grass Valley, California; Timaru, New Zealand and Victoria, Australia.
Williams somewhere in Wales - he kept moving
Ellis - Anglesey

Hi BradMajors,
I wonder if you would like to share the name of your relative.

Many here will be pleased to assist, I'm sure.

Immigration records may be located in many different places...some subscription, some free online, others private resources.... ;D

A search could be made with a bit more information.

Do you have an example image of a birth certificate from 1900?  I did not think marriage details were included.

I am assuming she was married.

For some odd reason you have always had to request that the marriage details be included when you order a birth certificate in Queensland.

Just adding that now some images are available instead of typed certificates I would expect that all the information recorded would be on that image.

Immigration indexes and digitised passenger lists are here:

https://www.qld.gov.au/dsiti/qsa/search#index-categories  (scroll down and choose 'immigration')

In general, the NAA holds records from Federation onwards, prior to that each State retains their records.

Sometimes records of immigration can't be found. I've got a couple like that. I think if the person paid their own passage they sometimes slipped through the cracks.

I don't know if you have already looked here but if she married in Qld you might find her marriage:

Her death certificate will say how long in the state if known by the informant, so you can do some sums to try to narrow down year of arrival.
