Cedar Grove Cemetery, Boston.
« on: Friday 16 February 18 23:53 GMT (UK) »
I have the downloaded map of Cedar grove but would like the whole burial records of the cemetery, are they available ?
Does any one live near here and visit it, take photos etc ?
I have at least one relation buried here in 1885.
I have no idea if there is a head stone ( tomb stone ).

I,ve had a look, sad to say not on there at the moment.
From what I can tell there are over 45000 burials in Cedar Grove so it may take a little time to find the grave and even then there might not be a tomb stone.
Fingers crossed.
The mans name was James Birchenough who died in 1885 and had been a stone carver ( stone mason ) from England, the day before his death he had his Will made out and in it he gave about $300 to pay for a plot at Cedar Grove.
He left behind a wife named Ellen who I have found in later records still in Boston up to at least 1896.
Ellen was his second wife with the same first name, the first having died in England about 1876, he also had a long relationship with a relation of mine called Mary Jane Helme before he left for the USA, he had many children from his past relationships.

Have you tried contacting the cemetery to get details?  If they give you a location of his grave, you could put a memorial for him on www.findagrave.com, then request a photo.  For cemeteries that large, volunteers prefer to have the location already given on the website.

I had a reply with some very good information on location of the grave, it is in section 19, Lot 640 and is about 75 sq feet in size, it is along a path called the Verbena path  and may have a Maple tree towards the corner of the plot just beside the path, the tree was only about one foot high back in about 1886 so could be some what larger now if still there.
Some other persons also in the grave are a William Allen WHO WAS A STONE CUTTER and may have been a friend of James Birchenough and the other person should be a Helen ( Ellen ) Davies who was James last wife who married again later in life.
I have no idea if there is a head stone or stones.
Good luck with this one.
