I think I've found James with his mother in / Ashton under Lyne/, b. Droylsden, Lancs on the 1881. His mother was Ellen and listed as unmarried.  His father could be fictitious or not.

I followed James forward and backwards so I think I have found the correct person.

No I didnt miss it Gadget.
As I explained I had already typed it up when I went to post I noticed your info.
I had extra stuff that I didnt want to delete ie the Baptisms that you didnt have.

Looks as if this might be Ellen with parents in 1851:

It's Wexford not Waterford though.  Might be worth doing some searches on the Irish records.

Nothing coming up so far on the Irish sites.  I wonder about the name of the eldest brother - William Norris Donnell, born Co. Waterford c. 1873.

Hi thankyou for all your help,  James is my great grandfather and apart from himself 2 brothers and Ellen as his mother on the 1881 census I've been unable to find birth register for him which is why i orderd copy of his marriage cert..
Have a feeling your right and his father may be fictitious too but your info on Jacobus (James) DONALD is very intersting, gives me a another direction to go in so thankyou again so much!! x
