Looking for bastardy order Sarah Buckley & John Meakin, 1821 Elvaston
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 08:47 GMT (UK) »
I'm am new to searching in Derbyshire, and I am now looking for a bastardy order.

Job Buckley was baptised at Elvaston on 7 Feb 1821, the illegitimate son of Sarah Buckley, servant.
Sarah married John Meakin at Elvaston on 24 Jun 1821.

Job used the surname Meakin, and when he married in 1847 he gave his father as John Meakin, labourer.

Please could folk with local knowledge suggest how I go about seeing if there is a bastardy order for this case.

Jebber - was that a link to the people I'm after?

When I clicked on it I got 403 - Forbidden: Access is denied

I see Derbyshire Archives have Elvaston bonds 1817-1820. However, rather than giving them a blank cheque for researching for no results, I was wondering if I can find something more certain to order.

I think there is a bastardy index on Rootsweb, but Lord knows when, or if, that will reappear.

The correct URL is:
http://calmview.derbyshire.gov.uk/calmview/

That link takes you their catalogue - which you have to search yourself.
My experience is that few Record Offices have Bastardy Orders online?
Garrad (Suffolk, Essex, Somerset), Crocker (Somerset), Vanstone (Devon, Jersey), Sims (Wiltshire), Bridger (Kent)

Sorry, I didn’t notice the link didn’t paste across properly, KGarrad has posted the right one, sometimes it is not easy on the iPad. As said, you have to search yourself.

Thanks Jebber & KGarrad

There's nothing jumping out of the Derbyshire Archives catalogue.

I suppose if John Meakin acknowledged Job as his son there would be no reason for the parish to get an order?

I have noticed that he shaved off around 2 years in most censuses, appearing to be born after his mother's marriage?

I cant see why there would be a order if they married very soon after Jobs birth.

Lots of couples had a child born before they married.

Trish :)

Do you have the 1841 Census?

1841 Census
Barrow Upon Trent, Derbyshire
John Meakin, 40, Ag Lab, not born in County
Sarah Meakin, 40
Timothy Meakin, 13
Elizabeth Meakin, 11
William Meakin, 9
Mary Meakin, 3
Ann Meakin, 8mths

MEAKIN, ANN, Mothers mn BUCKLEY***
GRO Reference: 1840  D Quarter in SHARDLOW UNION  Volume 19  Page 506

On John/Sarahs Marriage Johns Parish is Trowel Notts.
Sarah a minor, married with consent of Parents.

I did notice next door to the Meekin (sic) Family in 1851 is;
John Buckley born c 1802 Thuleton,
Likely Bapt 17 January 1802 Elvaston to THOMAS/SARAH
Cant find a Sarah to them though.

Sorry if going over what you already have.

Trish :)

Such a nice day today, so I attacked the garden!

Trish, thanks for having a look. Just some quick comments.

I have the family in 1841 but at Elvaston, rather than Barrow upon Trent.

Although John Meakin's marriage says he is from Trowell, Notts, and 1841 census says he was born out of county, in all four censuses 1851-1881 he gives Heanor DBY as his birthplace. I think he was baptised there 28 Feb 1798 s/o Timothy [note the name in 1841] Meakin & Sarah Hayward.

Looking at the 1821 marriage register I don't see that Sarah is a minor (although she probably was). I don't think there is any significance to "with the consent of parents" - every banns marriage on this page, and the page before and after, has the same consent text!

The Buckley name appears to go back quite far in Elvaston, but around this time it looks like Thomas and Sarah Buckley were the only family.

Trish, you didn't find Sarah Buckley's baptism - that's par for the course whenever I get a lead !

I'll keep looking.
