Profession of convict William Holden arrived 129 on the "Sarah"
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 13:07 GMT (UK) »
I was wondering whether anyone can decipher the profession of convict William Holden who arrived in New South Wales on the ship "Sarah" in 1829? Attached is an excerpt from his convict indent (the profession comes after the placename "Sussex"). Many thanks if anyone can help.

Wiki explains what charcoal burners do - or did - and why  :)

I think it begins with a "p". His "h" (see "right arm" in scan) has no long tail, but his "p" has a vertical stroke above the rounded bit.

It looks almost like "pld" followed by something like "leafed/leaped" (looks like either an "f" or a "p" in the middle to me - his "s" is different) and then...???  ???

Hmmm... ::)

Going by other entries on the indent page, it could be
pl(u)s Reaps Milks

So it could well be a list of his other skills -

 plus reaps (and) milks.

On arrival, convicts were questioned about occupations to determine their usefulness. There are so many entries on this register that it looks like they were all asked "Can you milk? Can you reap?" etc
