post-1911 Census records of Isaac Fletcher/Fleischer
« on: Saturday 17 February 18 21:17 GMT (UK) »
Seeking post-1911 Census information about Isaac Fletcher (Fleischer).

1911 Census 66 Edward Street, Lancashire, Broughton, Salford
Harris Fletcher (55) (head)
Janey (Bella Casket) Fletcher (54) (wife)

children: Nellie (22), Isaac (19), Sophia (17), Gertie (14)

Two other older children (of Harris and Janey) are indicated but not named on this census, but one is known to be Annie, later Annie Chadwick.

No record subsequent to this census of Isaac Fletcher and no record in correspondence or in family reminiscences of this young man. History and records of the other children named do exist.

The Fletcher name was anglicized by this family from the original Fleischer. It is strange that no record or even memory exists of this young Isaac Fletcher. Did he change his name? Was he ostracized? Was he a fallen UK patriot in war? Unknown.

One Isaac Fletcher, whose birthplace was not listed though his birth date of 1892 makes him a faint possibility for a match, was found to have been buried in 1967 at Saint Paul's Marton Burial Grounds along, later, with his spouse, Victoria. Because of the Christian burial grounds and the fact that Isaac's original last name suggests Hebrew ancestry, it seems to make this particular Isaac an unlikely, but nevertheless possible candidate for the Isaac Fletcher of this 1911 census. Unfortunately, St. Paul's church do not keep records of those interred there, according to the churchman I contacted by email.

Finally, to add to this mystery of the missing Isaac, UK records of Janey Fletcher's estate indicates the executor of her estate to be David Cohen, someone thought to be an "uncle" though he may instead have been a family friend. He is not listed as an attorney or rabbi.

(Researching this ancestry on behalf on my UK-born wife now living here in Texas, USA. Cannot travel to UK to inquire first-hand, therefore any help greatly appreciated.) Thanks!

Hi and welcome to Rootschat

Have you already looked for him on the 1939 register which is available on FindMyPast.com?  The search index is free but you have to buy credits to view the full record unless you have a FindMyPast subscription.  Rootschat do not allow 1939 lookups

I can see an entry for an Isaac Fletcher on the index - living in Blackpool

I have just looked at the 1967 death you mention and it was in Devon

Isaac Fletcher 75 (abt 1892) March 1967 Newton Abbot Volume 7a Page    589

There is this possibility for Victoria if she was buried in Marton

Victoria Fletcher 77 born 31 Dec 1900 death registered Mar 1978 Blackpool and Fylde

The Isaac Fletcher who died in 1967 left a will - he lived at 75 Clifton Drive Ansdell and died 16.3.1967 at the Torbay Clinic Torquay.  Probate was granted to his widow Victoria

I can't see a marriage at the moment as that is your only possibility of determining if it's your Isaac.  His marriage cert will show his fathers name

There's an Isaac Fletcher born in Sheffield living in Blackpool in both the 1901 and 1911 census.

There's an Isaac Fletcher living in Salford dying in 1947 born about 1891. he's actually Isaac J Fletcher and he's in the free index for the 1939 National Identity Register. As the family were in Salford in 1911 he may be a good possibility.

Just found the marriage

Marriages December qtr 1928
Fletcher    Isaac    Victora Wood/Walker  Fylde 8e   1206

You can order a copy of the marriage cert online at https://www.gro.gov.uk/gro/content/certificates/ and the cost is £9.25GB

You can say that you only want the cert if his father was Harris Fletcher

The Isaac Fletcher who died in 1944 ( sorry read the date wrong last night) is listed in the 1939 National Identity Register in Salford. It would be worth seeing if he has a similar occupation to your Isaac in the 1911. He is listed as Isaac J Fletcher.

Hello and welcome  :)

I am digressing here asking about Annie Chadwick. The only on3 I can see in 1911 indexes is married to Philip Chadwick. She, though has a maiden name of Cohen and as you mention David Cohen, I wondered if Janet had been married twice.
I may have the wrong Annie though.

Regards
Heywood

You can get a copy of the Will of Janey Fletcher who died 26 February 1920 with probate 13 May.

Hopefully her children are named in the will and if Isaac was still alive in 1920.
