DALVEEN or DELVEEN
« on: Sunday 18 February 18 08:14 GMT (UK) »
Dear Roots Chatters,

I am looking for a marriage between Hugh Dalveen a Baker and Mary MacDonald.  Their son Thomas Dalveen was born about 1836.  On his marriage certificate in the year 1860 in Victoria, Australia he said that he was born in Ayrshire.  I would really like to know where.  Thank you.

Erin Mary Ryan.

A brief history on Girvan and a map (individual streets not named) gives you some background on the town in the period of the c. 1850s https://maps.nls.uk/townplans/background/girvan.html

Guessing the family left for Australia in the 1850s?

Hi from NZ,
Hugh Devlin & Mary McDonald were both born Co Down Ireland and appear to have to have gone to the weaving industry in Girvan (where Thomas was born 7 Nov 1835) like 1000's of other Irish. 2 or 3 of Thomas's brothers went to the goldfields in Victoria. Andrew Devlin, born 13 Dec 1839 Girvan,  went to Dunedin, NZ to create the Devlin line there.
In Aust the name quickly evolved to Dalveen, on purpose i think. Nobody has a surname of Dalveen in NZ BDM records.
The Devlin line is my wifes, and I have made an extensive tree. Anything I can help with let me know.
Cheers Neil
