Baker - Bristol/Shirehampton 1850/60.
Hi Folkes, looking for a family who operated a bakery by the name of Filer.
Would any of the lists  available at the time have them listed and if so does anyone have access?

Cheers
Jack Gee

Hi Jack

May I ask why you have put your request on someone else's topic?  Unless someone happens to look at Anna99's topic, like I have, you are unlikely to get any response.

I can see why you may have chosen to make your request as the topic heading is Occupations Bristol.  However it doesn't mean that it is a general topic for all occupations.

Perhaps you would like to consider starting your own topic on the Filer family?   :)

Topic split off.

To Girl Guide and Kaye99 -
I posted this to OCCUPATIONS BRISTOL hoping that the topic would bring to the surface a list of businesses to help identify my target. I felt it was relevant to the subject.

The  1851 Census that you thankfully dropped in i have  seen the copy.

My George Gilbert according to oral history stayed at the Filers Bakery before they came to Australia.

98% of the correspondence to this forum have brick walls.
If i have offended anyone in this case then i apologise.

However if a topic comes up that might get a chance to get round any of my brickwalls i will still ask the questions. One of the techniques used by most genealogists is looking at information from a different angle [eg looking at spouses].

Cheers

In case you dont have this;

Marriage;
10 December 1837, Bristol, St Michael the Archangel on the Mount, Gloucestershire
James FILER, Father JOHN
Mary Ann GILBERT, Father WILLIAM
Both single
(Familysearch.Org)

Cant find a Baptism for James but there are several Filers on 1851 Census born Chelwood including a PHILLIP Filer.

His Bapt is on FreeREG  27 Jul 1817 Philip, Son of JOHN/ELIZABETH
Father a Labourer

Just wondered if being a Baker was a Family business.

Trish :)

As has just been posted, the James Filer on 1851 census had married a Mary Ann Gilbert.   The 1851 and 1861 census both show that the only Filer who was a Baker was said James Filer (indeed, he is the only Filer in the whole country who was a baker).   Clearly, this is the Filer family that you are seeking.

A belated thanks to all.
Especially Trish and Kgerrard - concise as usual.

The Filers were Bakers and James had a brother Abraham that was also a baker.

Please excuse my ignorance but what is Clifton Union?

Cheers
