« on: Sunday 18 February 18 11:14 GMT (UK) »
Transcribed by Mr Stuart Farrell the Scottish Genealogy Society has recently published a volume entitled: “Assynt Poor Register 1865-1916”.

The Poor Law (Scotland) Act of 1845 established parochial boards in rural parishes and towns with a central Board of Supervision in Edinburgh. The parochial boards built poorhouses for those categories of paupers who did not receive ‘outdoor relief’ (normally a small weekly sum of money). The Register of Poor for the Parish of Assynt survives from 1865 to 1927 and the entries are from two volumes held in the Highland Archives, Inverness (ref: CS/6/1/4-4). Information contained in the register included information such as name, residence, age, country and place of birth, religion, condition (adult whether married, single, or widowed), trade or occupation, whether disabled or destitute, earnings, name, age & weekly earnings of husband, wife or children. The price for this volume is £5.00 plus P&P and is available from our website: https://www.scotsgenealogy.com/Shop.aspx.
