It is a rather boring phrase.

I quite like the New Statesman  :D

Do you think he may have done the opposite to me and and written 'next' rather than 'last'?

I can't see where I may have written 'next' rather than 'last'. Please do show me Gadget.

By The Spectator I meant the 18th Century version of Addison and Steele not the modern one!

There is no phrase along the lines of Expectin every minute would be his next in Uncle Remus. Very Odd

I meant the writer not you  :)

I've done a search of various Uncle Remus works but nothing so far. I can't get anything out of that word other than minute - I even did a search with missing letters: m*ute/m*te

Uncle Remus wasn't/isn't my cup of tea. Maybe see if Bookbox has any other ideas.

Sorry Gadget, yes, the diarist not me. I think the phrase 'expectin... last' would be too commonplace for comment

Thanks for poking around Uncle Remus - wear gloves and a nose clip!

Discomfitingly there is a 'minute' in the same diary entry eight lines up. Attached.

The one that you've put up is far more angular in style - as if he's changed his pen or even his mood!

Added - it even has a different slant and spacing. As if he wrote them at a different times.  It reminds me of students' essays - written on different days.

I've seen many students write the same word in different styles in a single essay (my age is showing - back when people wrote by hand!).

Are you sure that it's from Uncle Remus, His Songs and His Sayings , as I've searched the text for various words but nothing comes up that's likely.
