no cause of death on death certificate for John Caunter
« on: Sunday 18 February 18 17:05 GMT (UK) »
There is no cause of death on the death certificate of my 3 times great grandfather John Caunter who died aged 23 in Ashburton, Devon on 8th November 1860 and was found by Sarah Tapper in North Street, Ashburton.  He was a tin/copper miner according to his marriage and death certificate but I don't know which mine(s) he worked in.  Does anyone know of any accidents in the mines near Ashburton that occurred around this time? Or any suggestions how I could find out more about how he died.  Thanks.

Hi and welcome to Rootschat :D

This is puzzling and not something I've come across. Does it just say "Unknown" under cause of death? Any mention of a Post mortem? I would have thought there would have been an inquest. There might be something in a local paper.

There is just a blank space under cause of death.

Strange.

There is a death notice in the Western Times and the Exeter Flying Post but nothing else. I wonder if there was a local Ashburton paper? I would have thought that a young man being found dead in the street would have been newsworthy.

He was buried on the 10th Nov and there is a Mary Ann Caunter 62 buried 19th Oct - is she conected? There do seem to be a lot of deaths winter of 1860/61 so maybe there was an epidemic of some kind?

Where does it say he was found dead in the street  :-\

Not all death certificates give cause of death.

That was my interpretation of "was found by Sarah Tapper in North Street, Ashburton"

If I recall my schoolboy social history, miners were regarded as having such dangerous jobs that when they died in an accident no inquest was held even though it would otherwise have been required. Is there  a local paper that may have reported a mining accident?
