In John Harding's biography of Billy Meredith there are two photographs of the directors in 1904 when the club won the FA Cup. Painter is not among them.

Thank you. I shall make enquiries. If he wasn't a director at Man City, I wonder if he was at a different club (if at all). Other than United there wouldn't be too many other clubs knocking around then from that area.

Nearly all the local clubs were well establish by 1920. City, despite their billions, are still a community club at heart and I'd be surprised if they weren't supportive of your enquiry.
