I have a reference from David Dobson's Scots Irish Links series

SRO RD3/5/288
David Rankin merchant Londonderry merchant 1662

Where can I access this document?

Not sure if Scottish Record Office has changed name?

(I reside in Co Down).

It is a reference to the Register of Deeds held by what are now called the National Records of Scotland, based in Edinburgh.

Thanks for that - I suppose you have to visit to see the document?

There doesn't appear to be a way of ordering a photocopy online --

You would have to visit to see the register. It could just be a document recording a financial transaction. There is a printed index to the Register from 1661-1696. Dobson may have just seen the index rather than the record itself unless he has given some detail which suggests otherwise.

Yes, twice.

It renamed itself the National Archives of Scotland, then it re-renamed itself the National Records of Scotland.
Never trust anything you find online (especially submitted trees and transcriptions on Ancestry, MyHeritage, FindMyPast and other commercial web sites) unless it's an image of an original document - and even then be wary because errors can and do occur.
