Bowles family
« on: Monday 19 February 18 17:34 GMT (UK) »
Hi
I'm very new to this and I hope I'm posting in the right place!

I'm looking for the birthplace of my ancestor David Bowles, born around 1860 in Ireland. According to the census' there was no specific place noted.

His son Joseph is my Great Grandfather and he was born around 1886.
David ended up in Halifax, West Yorkshire.

Does anyone recognise the name? Are you also looking for Bowles' that moved to Manchester and Yorkshire?

Do you have any hints or tips about finding the birthplace of an Irish ancestor?

Many thanks!

Welcome to Rootschat

If the family dathai found is correct...

In 1871 they were in Manchester and listed as
William Bowles   Head   58 b. Ireland; Labourer, Slater
Ann Bowles   Wife   40 b. Ireland
Kate Bowles   Daughter   19 b. Ireland
bap. St. Paul's, Dublin on Sep 12 1851; RC name BOLES
William Bowles   Son   15  b. Ireland
bap. Barrack Hill, Cavan on Sep 30 1855; CoI & RC name BOWLES
George Bowles   Son   13 b. Ireland
bap. Barrack Hill, Cavan on Feb 11 1858; CoI & RC name BOWLES
David Bowles   Son   11 b. Ireland
bap. in The Barracks, Cavan on Feb 02 1860; CoI
Eliza Bowles   Daughter   9 b. Ireland
      no record found
Mary A Bowles   Daughter   7 b. Ireland
      b. Apr 29 1864 Cavan LINK; name BOLES
Margaret Bowles   Daughter   5 b. Ireland
      b. Nov 13 1866 Cavan LINK; name BOWLES

There are two baptisms for some in both RC and CoI

For these baptisms - William is shown as a Sergeant in the Militia and Ann's maiden name is given as Tracy on some records

I don't immediately see a marriage for William BOWLES/BOLES/BOWLS and Ann TRAC(E)Y

edited to add
This may be the marraige on Oct 25 1850 in St. Mary's Athlone, Co. Westmeath
William is shown as 14th Regt.
There is a record for a William BOWLES of the 14th Regt bc1813 from Granard, Co. Longford

This ties in with 1891 census return found by dathai also LINK
If you look at the original where it shows Ann BOWLES was born in Westmeath and then on the next page at  the same address is Mary Ann and Maggie both born in "County Cavin", Ireland
