Minot Harrington?
« on: Monday 19 February 18 17:35 GMT (UK) »
Anyone have any information on the use of Minot as a Christian name? Is it associated with a particular religious belief or cultural background?
I know it occurs quite a lot in the USA, but I seem to have the name appear out of the blue in Essex in 1851. The details are:
1851, Lamarsh, Essex.
Ishmael Harrington, head
Minot (?) Harrington, Son
Hannah Harrington, sister.
Eliza Harrington, daughter.

So far I have been unable to find any explanation for the name, as the rest of Ishmael Harrington's children in the 1841 Lamarsh census are standard names: William, Anne, Sarah, Phillip, Robert and Edward. Minot seems to disappear after this entry.

The entry for 1851 is very feint, and I wondered at first if it was a mistranscrption, but it does look like Minot. Anyone have another solution or able to view the entry clearer?
Many thanks as always.

Yep, with that clarity it does! I couldn't get it anywhere near as good as that!
Another mystery solved!

Thanks for this Mabel Bagshawe.
That now makes more sense of this family. I had recently found Ishmael Harrington marrying Sarah Weavers in Sudbury in 1859, and in 1871 in Lamarsh they are living with Esther, Sarah Weaver's daughter from a previous marriage. Wondered where all those early children came from. Marrying 2 Sarahs is just confusing...

Thanks again, Mabel Bagshawe. Good to have the details.
As I am a relative beginner to family history searching, I'm fascinated by where all this information comes from. In your last post but one about Harington, Robert and Henington, Edward, you are able to quote mmn as Butcher. Can you tell me where the mmn information comes from? It is obviously hugely significant in searching, and I so often only get a record with the father's name and mother's christian name. Sorry if this seems pretty basic stuff!
Thanks again for your work on this topic.
