Walter Solomon MARTEN

Having difficulty in tracing this man beyond 1874, and would appreciate a bit of help, please.

What I have on him is as follows:

Birth: 1846 Brighton

Census: 1851, 1861, 1871

Marriage: 23 Dec 1874 in Reigate, to Bertha Jane Westwood

And that's it........

On the 1881 Bertha Jane is with her mother and four children 5 years and under - so he was around for a few years at least! She is on the 1891.  Both Reigate.

It is only when we get to 1901 that she is marked as a widow - but I can't find his death. So, where is he?

There are results for 1882 onwards from newspaper archives, that I don't have full access to, indicating that he was a missing or wanted person.

eg "WALTER SOLOMON MARTEN, 35 Years of age, about 5 feet in height, brown hair, pale blue eyes, prominent nose ; formerly a commercial traveller. Wife and four children...?? Pounds Reward"

Sorry, Giggsy, I did reply to your message - but see it has not appeared.

On the 1871 census he is described as "commercial traveller"

On the marriage cert 1874 he is described as "agent"

I get the impression that it is one paper called Poor Law Unions' Gazette.  Walter appears in a large number of references on Find My Past for several different Unions.  Same description each time but the rewards vary.
