Marriage Certificate - Johann Hofmann & Helene Blankstein 1905
« on: Tuesday 20 February 18 03:46 GMT (UK) »
I would greatly appreciate assistance with reading the attached documents. I have no problem understanding the printed German text but would like to know for example the names of the parents of the bride and groom, and whatever other information there is. I find the old style German hand-writing so difficult to read.

Thank you in anticipation.

This is a pretty difficult handwriting style to decipher in places.

Fabrikarbeiter Johann Wilhelm Hofmann
evangelischer Religion
geboren am dreißigsten September 1881
zu Schalkhausen, Bezirksamt Ansbach, wohnhaft in Nied
Sohn der {...} Anna Apollonia Hofmann

Frieda Helene Blankenstein {...}
... geboren am dreiundzwanzigsten
August 1886 zu Höchst am Main, wohnhaft in Nied
Tochter der Eheleute Fabrikarbeiter Friedrich Blankstein
und Karoline Wilhelmina Henriette geborene Schneider
wohnhaft in Nied

The second page records the witness, but more interestingly perhaps, the birth of the Hofmann children - four daughters and a son.

Thank you so much, Justin.
That is a great help as I am particularly interested in the parents of the bride - we have had no information about them before, and it was so frustrating being unable to read this document. We will be in Germany later this year and plan on visiting the various archives to try and obtain more documents.

Thank you again.
Kind regards

You're very welcome, Cherryl.

I have just managed to make out Helene's occupation; she was a Bügelerin - an ironer in a laundry.

As it happens, I lived very happily to the east of Frankfurt am Main throughout the 1990s. I'm sure you will enjoy your visit.

Justin

I agree, Karen, I am also very impressed. My husband is German (born in Frankfurt) and I am trying to put together some of his family history. As you no doubt know, many of the documents are simply photocopies of the original old Stammbuch or whatever they are called in the archives and while my German is pretty good, I find so many of them impossible to work out.

I also lived in Frankfurt for four years but that was way back in 1977. We often go back and I love seeing the continual change to the city and surrounding areas. We live in Australia now, so it is quite different here :)

Thanks again to you both for the assistance and comments.
Regards

You've certainly moved around!
I've restricted my addresses to Blighty, Germany and Spain. So far... Barring a lottery win, I expect we'll stay here in D.  ;)

I recently tried to find old friends in Oz, without success. It being such a small world sometimes, please let me know if you know of an English man with a German wife who have (or used to have) an Alpaca farm down under, I think in NSW.  ;D

All the best from Wolfenbüttel, where we are supposed to be getting minus 12  :o in a few days,
Karen
