In a previous post Sinann asked whether I had had a look at 1911 census  for stephen mansfield which I did and have now found a Stephen Mansfield in 1871 census. It also has him as a wood carver living in Hume Manchester age 27  and Agnes laroche is also there . That all fits in with Patrick Stephen Mansfield.  However it then states that Stephen was from New York and also my understanding was that  Patrick and Agnes married in 1870!!!!

I mentioned 1871 in reply #7.

The names are mixed up- it shows Mary Mansfield as wife when, presumably, she is Agnes’ mother.
The householder probably gave the information.
It is strange re New York though without any further information.

They were married in 1870 - do you have the certificate as you know his father’s name?

I think I will order a marriage certificate then that will confirm the father’s name and employment. It may not get us much further back but will confirm a few things. Thank you all so much for your help so far.

Regards

Gill

This index shows father as James - may be you got it there.

Patrick is named as father for several baptisms and also possibly as a marriage witness in 1869 to Michael Power and Ann Parker, certainly as a witness to a Lariche wedding and possibly as a godfather in 1867 to a Margaret McGrath.

The church registers in midleton are as stated previously by Heywood for baptisms to James Mansfield & Mary Donovan.  No marriage record for James & Mary they could have married in a different parish.
The scenario of Patrick Stephen stating on the Census that he originated in New York is quite puzzling - Gill where did you get Cork from?

Yes and he is Stephen in 1871 too. This is only part of the household.
