Jean Ramsay and William Stewart
« on: Tuesday 20 February 18 23:36 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I'm researching my family tree, especially the Stewart Branch. I've traced back to my 3x Great Grandfather who was called John Stewart and he was born in Culter in 1814 to a William Stewart and Jean Ramsay.

However, I've done some research on William and I'm unsure if I'm actually looking for the correct William. I focused on a William Stewart born in 1792 and it led to William Stewart Snr and a Cecilia Wishart but the records states that William Stewart died in Australia... Which is why I'm unsure I got the right person. In addition, I cannot seem to find anything on Jean either.

I do know they got married in Winston and Robertson in 1813 and had John a year later, followed by a daughter, Cecilia in 1817.

Any advice on what else I can use to find more info on them?

Cheers.

Which records state that William Stewart died in Australia?  If it is just a tree on Ancestry then beware as these trees are not particularly accurate.  People just seem to pluck any info that suits them and put it together on one tree without verifying anything.

I can't find any records that suggested that he died in Australia. So I think you're right about other trees and people plucking info from thin air.. I wanted to check if there's any other avenues that I didn't explore. I've looked on Scotland's People, Find my Past, Ancestry... Anything else?
