Kate White born about 1849 in Kingsbridge Devon

I believe my three times great grandmother may have been a Kate White born about 1849 in Kingsbridge Devon.

The earliest census I have found her in is 1871:

Kate Ridgway, 22, born Kingsbridge, Devon, wife, resident in Waddesdon Buckinghamshire. She appears with her husband Eli Ridgway (23) and her daughter Louisa Ridgway (3).

I can find no record of her marriage to Eli (who appears in some records as George Ridgway) but I located her maiden name by ordering the birth certificate of one of her daughters in Staffordshire:

Ellen Ridgway, born 2 Nov 1874 at Court 5 Lea Brook Road, girl, father George Ridgway a colliery labourer, mother Kate Ridgway formerly White, informant Kate Ridgway mother Court 5 Lea Brook Road Tipton.

I am wondering whether anyone can locate a birth record for Kate or her 1851 or 1861 census entries? I am struggling with it and have had no luck.

I see that Louisa’s birthplace is said in 1871/1881 to be Kentish Town - has a birth reg been found for her?

There is a Louisa Ridgway birth registered in the 2nd quarter of 1868 in the Pancras district of London. That doesn't seem to be too far from Kentish Town on the map. I haven't ordered that certificate though. Are you thinking it might be worth ordering another child's certificate to see whether the maiden name is the same?

It’s always worth tracing the birth of the first child in order to understand the family’s chronology - was she already with George/Eli by then and if not which of them was the child’s parent etc.

The index at GRO Online shows the mother’s maiden name of Louisa Ridgeway b Pancras 1868 as Pillage.

(I agree that Pancras would be the expected registration district for a Kentish Town birth).

Thanks so much for that hint, I'll have a look for a Kate Pillage in Kingsbridge. I didn't realise the GRO index had maiden names so that's really helpful! I will order that certificate too.

Interestingly (from a geographical point of view) there is also this birth:

Alice Ridgway mmn Pillage, Sep qtr 1872 Dudley (died Dec qtr 1874 Dudley, aged 2).

Thanks heaps again. I've just come across a Kate White Pillage birth registered in Kingsbridge in the 2nd Q of 1848 so I'll be investigating that one. Her baptism transcription (born 22 May 1848 and baptised 31 Dec 1848) at Dodbrooke on Findmypast only shows her mother's first name (Maria) so the (presumably) illegitimate birth may explain the two maiden surnames used later on.
