Another phrase from Scottish Court of Session -Completed
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 09:30 GMT (UK) »
I think the ‘squiggle’ after ‘Pain of Rebellion’ must be ‘etc’
I have looked this up, and found the full phrase is usually ‘Under Pain of rebellion and putting (him) to the horn’.

Can anyone tell me what it means!
I think a ‘pain’ was a fine, but ‘putting to the horn’?

Sounds nasty!

Many thanks

put to the horn:

Quote
Letters of horning (Scots law): a document (i.e., letters) issued by civil authorities that publicly denounce a person as a rebel. The document was issued against persons who had not paid their debts.

Historically, the documents would be announced by three blasts of a horn, and the documents themselves came to be known as "letters of horning". A person who was denounced in these documents was described as having been "put to the horn".

From Wiki.

GR will probably be able to give you a more thorough definition.

Gadget has it right. There are registers of hornings in the case of those who did not pay up. Being registered opened you up to imprisonment or seizure of goods.
