George Ross born about 1807 County Down, Ireland
« on: Wednesday 21 February 18 18:51 GMT (UK) »
Looking for a George Ross born about 1807 County Down.  Some info I have lists his middle initial as W.  At some point before 1847 he appears to have come to Ontario, Canada and settled in Lambton County.  We know there were a number of Irish settlers in that area and many became farmers.  We believe George died 28 SEPTEMBER 1878 Lambton County, Ontario, Canada and is buried in Zion United/Postill-Ossian Cemetery.

He married a woman named Elizabeth.  We do not know if this was in Canada or Ireland.  Searches of Canadian records has resulted in no records.  We believe Elizabeth was born about 1813 but do not know if in Ireland or ???  We believe she passed before 1871 as George is listed as Widowed in the 1871 census.

Have been unable to find them in 1851 or 1861 census.

We know of the following children all born in Ontario

Maria J Ross 1847–1886

Elizabeth Ross 1853–

Lavina Ross 1857–1928

Charles Ross 1863–1932

Most of the above is confirmed with Canadian records but George and Elizabeth's possible birth years are from an old family tree created in the 1960s or 1970s and census documents in Canada for George

Presumably this is the FIND A GRAVE entry for George Ross

https://www.findagrave.com/memorial/132344248

Probably a silly question - Have you enquired to see if Elizabeth is also buried here  ???

Thanks for the info on burials.

One added piece regarding his wife Elizabeth (sometimes listed as Eliza).  Several children moved to Michigan so she may have passed there. Trying to find any death that links to her.

You  would need to know George’s denomination and roughly where he came from to have much chance of tracing him. Looking at the 1901 census of Co Down there were 8 people named George Ross so a fairly common name. They were a mix of Presbyterians and Church of Ireland (Anglican). So probably descended from Scots who settled in the county in the 1600s.

I would get a copy of George’s death certificate to see if it names his parents. That would be helpful in ensuring you find the right family.

Not all the churches in Co Down have records for 1807, and of those that do, not all are on-line. The most complete set of records is in PRONI (the public record office) in Belfast but searching the entire county might involve looking at 300 sets of records, so you need to try and narrow the search somehow. And you need his parents names.

I have looked for a death record for George but no luck.  I will try and visit the cemetery this spring and see if any records exist there.

He is listed as "Presbyterian" on the 1871 census and listed as widowed so we know his wife Elizabeth had passed before the census was taken.   No death record for her either.  The children shown on the 1871 census list religion as "Weslyan Methodist".  Possibly a hint about wife Elizabeth's religion.

Still looking for a possible death in Michigan as some family were living there.

Found the tree mentioned but it is only close.  Some dates match but the linked "Find a Grave" has a maiden name of Fisher and a different death date and place.

The death record attached for George Wallace Martin is for a Norman Martin which could be a son except the birth info is incorrect.  I have a birth record for the son.  The tree seems to have some confused info.  I'm sure we have all had that at some point.  I likely still do

Appreciate the lead.
