Looking for any more information (age or county) regarding the passengers, particularily the Bourke family, to Adelaide on the Canton which arrived 31 July 1846 from London via Plymouth?

Also, here on the State Library's 'Bound For South Australia' collection (prepared by the late Di Cummings): http://www.slsa.sa.gov.au/BSA/1846Canton.htm.

But not much more than the Observer list above.
Heyer, Wray, Fullgrabe, Kayser, Beecken (all Upper Sturt or country South Australia)

The survival rate for passenger lists in Australia is poor and the reason you won't find anything more is simply because most of the emigrants on the CANTON were free ie not assisted.  Documentation survives in the form of Certificates for Final Departure for Assisted Emigrants under the authority of the Colonial Land and Emigration Commissioners etc. departing England but the CANTON is not on that list in 1846.

Also should be noted from Di CUMMINGS website "Each link is directed to an image of a list of passengers for that particular ship. Unfortunately the information on some images may not be 100% accurate, as they were transcribed from microfilmed images of the 'South Australian Register' newspaper of the day. Where possible the list has been compared with photocopies of actual passenger lists (many of which are difficult to read)."

The Adelaide Observer 1 Aug 1846
The Canton, 506 tons, Friend, master, left Gravesend on the 20th April, and Plymouth on the
27th of the same month, bringing 256 passengers, of whom the majority are free emigrants, including, a hundred female servants. This ship, which has made the present passage in ninety four days, performed her first voyage to South Australia several years ago, when she brought cargo for the South Australian Company.

Cheers :)

Thank you for the replies, it does seem from later page reports in the Adelaide Observer of 1 Aug 1846 that some passengers on the Canton originated from famine ridden Co.Tipperary, which was my hope, but these accounts were not attributed.

Without further evidence that the Bourke family members on the Canton are in fact connected, I can only speculate, but if so, they would have come from Co. Tipperary. John (b abt 1800) and his wife (possibly Bridget and also b abt 1800) Patrick (b abt 1825). The other family names are not recorded or known and this is the only commonality with the known Bourke family members. It is known that Patrick Bourke (b1825) was present in Victoria during the 1850's goldfields time and later came to New Zealand where he attended the Otago goldrush, before later farming in Taranaki where he died in 1907.

Hi Karaka, wondering if you ever found out any more about the Bourkes on the Canton to Adelaide in 1846?
I suspect they may be the same Bourke/Burke family that I’m looking for.
Regards, Dave
