Is there a Queensland in Hampshire?
« on: Friday 23 February 18 04:24 GMT (UK) »
Ancestry gives two options in their drop=-down box for 'Queensland' - Queensland, Australia and Queensland, Hampshire

There is a query on a current thread on the Australia Board re an address for a person nominated as Next of Kin for his son's enlistment in The Prince of Wales West Yorkshire regiment in 1889 The address for the father is just given as 'Queensland'  The O P is trying to find out whether it's Qld in Australia or another Queensland

No-one seems to be able to find any reference to a Queensland in UK, although Wikipedia suggests that there  are others : Queensland, Calgary, a neighbourhood in Alberta, Canada and
Queensland, Georgia, an unincorporated town in Georgia, U.S.

So - is/was there a Queensland in Hampshire as sown on Ancestry?

I've searched on Ancestry using that dropdown item and can not (yet) find any results that link back to a genuine Queensland in England.

There are fairly recent (2000s) U.S. Obituary Collection results that show "Queensland, Hampshire, England" but they are described as from a "...compilation of obituaries published in U.S. newspapers, collected from various online sources..." and are probably human or machine error based.

Other results are "Queensland or England" or Queenslanders in England

Thanks matthewj64.  I don't think there is one at all.  However I'm sure I've seen a map of fields somewhere in UK where a field was known as "New Zealand" or some other antipodean name.  I have no idea where I came across this and perhaps I'm completely wrong.  :-\

Having looked at the image of the enlistment papers I would be 95% thinking that it meant Qld, Australia.  As his mother's name and address were recorded (and his brother's name) my guess would be that the authorities were not that bothered in finding the exact whereabouts of his father.

To put you out of your misery:
New Zealand is a hamlet in the civil parish of Hilmarton in Wiltshire, England. Nearby villages are Goatacre, Hilmarton and Lyneham; the nearest town is Calne, approximately 4 miles to the southwest.

Rightmove (an online estate agent) has properties in Queensland, Southampton:

It appears to be a district in Central Southampton?
