Since the word 'Queensland' is given in isolation I would say it is the Australia one.

Annette

Perhaps ... but .... if recorded prior to 1 January 1901 then recording 'Australia' as part of an address would be referring only to the continent.  Queensland was a self-governing colony, hived off from New South Wales in 1859.... Commonwealth of Australia federated by Act of Parliament (U.K.) effective 1 Jan 1901.

In the snip, sufficient space left for street details, but I doubt sufficient space for both street and town information.  And not enough room to write 'Australia' after Queensland ...

So I am still left wondering.

Louis was indeed born on the 29th August 1886 in 22 Lawrence Street York.
His mother registered his birth and it does say Father George English.
When his son George Henry marries in Middlesbrough in 1892 it says father George English but not deceased.
And the same on his sisters marriage in 1891

The question as to whether the father was dead or alive would not normally be asked by the clergy.

Thank you KGarrard for putting my mind at rest re the "New Zealand" near Hilmarton, Wilts.  At least I can be happy that some of my memory cells still work.  ;D All of which has nothing to do with the actual question.

Thank you to JM for pointing out that there was no actual formal country of Australia at the time of the enlistment - you'd think I'd know my history better!  :-[

I rather suspect that George may possibly be the George ENGLISH who died in Oxley, Qld in 1907
http://www.rootschat.com/forum/index.php?topic=788400.0

The last child registered to George and Ann was registered in 1886,
daughter marries 1891, son marries 1892, both name George as their father and do not say that he's deceased.
By 1891 Ann is using a different surname and with another man
Ann Elizabeth marries in 1894, stating that she is a widow,
Speculation, of course!
