William Boxall born Iping, Sussex
« on: Friday 23 February 18 08:10 GMT (UK) »
I'm looking for the birth of William Boxall in about 1849-51. His father was George Boxall (1818-1893), and I believe his mother was Jane Buckland, born in Burnham, Bucks (1821-1852). They married in 1849 in Marylebone. On the marriage certificate George's occupation is soldier, and I have since found him serving in the Crimean War.

In the 1851 census, George is living with his brother Thomas at Iping, and Jane is living in Marylebone, London. Perhaps William hadn't yet been born before the Census. In 1861 William is living in Iping with his father and George's new wife Emily Batchelor.

Just clarifying -the date of the marriage between George & Jane was 25 October 1849. Jane is a Spinster when she married.

It is possible to search the GRO index for births showing surname Boxall mothers maiden surname Buckland, there are none at that time that match that criteria.

In 1861 William is living in Iping with his father and George's new wife Emily Batchelor.

Are you sure they aren't living in Portsea, Hampshire?

Thank you for the replies.

Yes, that marriage date is the right one. I guess it's possible that William was the child of Emily Batchelor, although they didn't marry until 1855. Perhaps William was illegitimate.

Although in the 1861 Census there is a big age gap between his children, William (12) and Sarah (6months). Maybe he was still in the army and serving away from home between 1855 and 1861.

Yes - You're right, that are living in Portsea, Hampshire. My mistake.

In 1851 a 1 year old William Batchelor b. Easebourne is living in Easebourne Workhouse as a pauper.

On the line above is a 24 year old unmarried Emily Batchelor, dressmaker but who gives her birthplace as Bramshot, Hampshire rather than the Iping, Sussex given in later census'.
