I think that it may be an idea to buy that marriage certificate.  It MAY give an occupation for Ethel but it should also give us some information on her husband that could help us progress with it.

If your mum's birth cert says her mother was Ethel Margaret Roberts and no maiden name is shown for Ethel - it suggests she was possibly single at that time hence the adoption

If that's the case - then the Nash/Roberts marriage may not be correct and she may have left Surrey after your mum's birth and married elsewhere

That marriage was March qtr 1944 and your mum was born 31.5.1945 so was conceived roughly 6 - 8mths after that marriage.

If she was a child of that marriage - even if Mr Roberts died in WW2 - her details would be different on the birth cert

Ethel may be the 1947 or 1948 marriage but again - it's not certain

The crossing out (etc) is the updating of her name, originally Nash, to her married name of Roberts when she provided evidence of her marriage in 1944.

Have another look at the numbers, which are birthdates rather than ages (so 80 means 1880, etc).

On your mother’s birth cert - is Ethel shown as Ethel Margaret or just as Ethel?

I think that it may be an idea to buy that marriage certificate.  It MAY give an occupation for Ethel but it should also give us some information on her husband that could help us progress with it.

The reason I suggested this is like Carol I am concerned that the birth certificate does not mention Ethel's maiden name.  Hopefully if an occupation is given for Ethel it will tie in with the birth certificate.  John's occupation may also give clues as to where they may be after WW2

As I mentioned earlier I cannot see how Surrey HC could confirm that it is the same person.
