Carroll Sturgeon and Roy Chambers
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 01:49 GMT (UK) »
I'm have trouble figuring exactly which unit my ancestors were in during WW1. One of them Carrol Wesley Sturgeon, was over in France as assistant postmaster. I have copies of his enlistment and discharge papers. Since its a copy there are some black blots covering some of it. On his enlistment paper I really cant make out what it says. Then on his discharge papers it says
Cpl.(Corporal), Casual Det. #1277 ? last asg'd Co. D  P.E. D or S   A.P.O.
Ive found a newspaper clipping saying the he was with the Motor Dispatch Service.

My other one was Roy Francis Chambers. All I know is that he was a quartermaster and he did go over. Ive found a newspaper clipping and it said something about the Kansas Calvary and company A. DOn't know if that helps.

When and where were these 2 gentlemen born?

You don't say so, but I assume they are American?

On Caroll Wesley's Enlistment papers, it says:

Present occupation as Assistant Postmaster in Eureka. Employed by US Government.
Previously a Private in the Kansas National Guard, for 2 months.

Yes they both are. Carroll was born in 1892 in Middletown, Missouri and Roy in 1894ish somewhere in Kansas. Carroll did serve before the war to try to capture Pacho Villa.

https://www.archives.gov/veterans - would this not be the place to start for US Army veterans or is this where you got what you have already?  Or here https://www.kshs.org/p/world-war-i-manuscripts-resources/11203

Given the clues in the background APO is almost certainly Army Post Office so Casual Detachment 1277, last assigned to Company D (PE D or S??) Army Post Office.  Need an expert on US Army postal organisation.
