William Vaughan Williams - Llanbeblig
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 08:44 GMT (UK) »
Hi,

I am trying to establish the origin of the use of the name Vaughan in my family tree but currently without success - can anyone help?

William was born 1817  - parents Owen Williams (1783-1869) and Lowry (Laura) Jones (1777- 1844). He was baptised at Moriah Calvinistic Methodist Chapel on 1 April 1817. His daughter and granddaughter were given "Vaughan" as a middle name but I have not been able to trace the origin of this practice.

Owen (c1783) was born in Llanwnda and his wife Lowry (Laura) (c1777) in Llandeiniolen - I have not been able to trace the names of eithers parents, nor Owen and Lowry's marriage details.

Any ideas to help solve this mystery would be much appreciated

Many thanks

Alan

An update, as I have noticed a baptism of Owen Williams on Family Search -

Llanwnda 9 June 1783

Does anyone have access to the image ?

Many thanks

The transcription doesn't give a father's name but it looks like Shadrac and and mother Elen.

Thanks David,

That's a new name to me - I wonder if Elen's maiden name could be Vaughan?

No help with Vaughan but if Shadrac Williams is the father there may be another new name to add. I believe in this case Williams is a patronymic name and there is a baptism for a Shadrach in Llanrug on 7/12/1745 father William Bedward mother Alice.

Thank you Glyn,

Something to look further into. Have found a "tree" on Ancestry for William Bedward/Alis showing the son Shadrach (1745) but nothing more. Maybe worth contacting them to see if they know anything.

One point of interest is that one family member was given the middle name Edwards - I wonder if this could be the source of this - more questions than answers.

Hi Alan
I am going to confuse matters even further. Based on my ancestors who were born around the same time and area there is a good chance that Owen Williams is a patronymic name. There is a William baptised in Llanwnda on 19 May 1782 whose parents were William Prichard and wife Jane.
I see that Owen and Laury had another son Abraham baptised 1 August 1814 at the same chapel in Caernarvon. In both cases Owen's parish before marriage is given as Llanllyfni. I was wondering what your source for Llanwnda was?

Hello Glyn,

Thanks for your note - I must admit that I took Llanwnda from the 1851 census quite a while ago where I thought Owen was living with his daughter Margaret. Having revisited this census it is not the right family. Fresh eyes make such a difference - thank you - time to look in the direction of Llanllyfni and potentially the Prichard connection.

Owen's wife Laura I have found in 1851 (living in South Penrallt) age 68 - showing as a widow - so Owen has died between 1841 and 1851. I will look into this again.

As far as I know Owen/Lowry had 3 children - Abraham, William Vaughan, and Margaret - all baptised at Moriah, but so far have not found family attaching to either Abraham nor Margaret.

Time for some more research.

Alan

Hi,

I have found burials for both Owen and Laura on Carnarvon Traders - Parish Chest.

Owen buried 13 Jan 1845 age 64; Laura buried 3 April 1854 age 73.

Hoping this may lead to finding their parents etc.

Alan
