Royal Flying Corps/Royal Air Force - help needed to decipher records
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 13:21 GMT (UK) »
Hello All,

I am trying to decipher my Great Grandfather's Airmen's record to find out exactly where he served in WWI. He was with the RFC/RAF from 18 July 1916 until 10 Apr 1922, and from his papers he served in France from 2 Jan 1917 until the end of the war in 1918.

I can understand his promotions, he starts as a 1st Air Mechanic (Aero Engine Fitter) and works his was up to a Corporal, but what I am having trouble with is the locations/units he was working in.

I have attached the section of his discharge papers stating his unit movements. It just has "ERS" at the top, with no other detail pre 1919....was this the Engine Repair Shops in France?

Also wondering if anyone can decipher the movements after the end of the war?

Any help would be great  ;)

Ok, thanks Ady  ;)

So that means that  2(N)ARD is RAF Coal Aston - No.2 (Northern) Aircraft Repair Depot then?

One down  ;D

Ah ok, cool....wonder why they used a different name though? Are they being less specific? As in he is at RAF Coal Aston (Greenhill) but not specifically with the Aircraft Repair Depot?
