Joseph Harrison died 1842 in Morton,Gainsborough.
« on: Saturday 24 February 18 15:01 GMT (UK) »
My ancestor Joseph Harrison died in 1842, in Morton, Gainsborough. He was on the 1841 census (aged 40) with his wife Sarah ( Snow) and 3 of his children, William, Walter and Moses. His occupation was a painter. A No was entered in born in County column. I have tried to find his birth - the nearest was a Joseph Harrison born in 1794 in Costock, Notts but I have found a death for him at 6 days. As there is no father on early marriage records, that doesn't help. A William Harrison was a witness.
How do I find out where my gggrandfather was born. I can't get further back on this line.

The death registration index for the 1842 Gainsborough record gives an age of 48

HARRISON, JOSEPH       age 48
1842  Dec Quarter in GAINSBURGH UNION  Volume 14  Page 201

ADDED the burial index confirms that age

Where did he marry Sarah

Free Reg has  13 Joseph Harrison's baptised between 1795/7 , but with only approximate  date of birth to go on you  have a challenge to prove anyone of them is yours. Witness at marriage could be father or brother, and children could  be named after grandfather, so a lot of elimination to do - and then only speculative.

Thank you - I have given up so many times. It seems an impossible task. Hoping someone has something I haven't thought of.

Does anyone have access to old Lincolnshire newspapers?  On British newspapers Archives, (of which I am not a member), I saw an article under Family Notices, re the death of Joseph Harrison - newspaper issue date 4/11/1842. Although I subscribe to Findmypast, I cannot find it in their newspapers. Can anyone help?

Thank you - it doesn't give me any more info but it is something. How did you search it - I couldn't get it?

Starting here
https://search.findmypast.co.uk/search/british-newspapers

Then kept narrowing search by date until I had 4 Nov 1842

Then I put his name into 'Who' at the top

It also worked by only bringing the year back to 1842 and putting Joseph Harrison in the name and Morton into 'what else'
