Have you checked this marriage ..........................  ???

William Waterson -  Mary Ann  Stott Waterston 1869 - 296/ 1 - Kinnell

a birth

David Stott Waterston - M - 1869 - 283/ 9 - Dunnichen

or Wm Waterson married Sarah Crockett - 8 November 1869 - Audrain,Missouri

First 4 children on this census have names which loosely fit and seem to be the ones on that 1880 passenger list.  Unlikely to be your Waterston family though.

in the 1891 census -Newton Bank Forfar ( perhaps not the location your William was born)

William Waterston   50 born Forfar.
Sarah M Waterston   42 born Missouri.
David E Waterston   20 Born 1871 Missouri. USA.
John J Waterston   19 Born 1872 Missouri. USA
Thomas Waterston   7 Born 1884 Forfar.  Scotland.
Herbert Waterston   5 Born 1886 Forfar. Scotland.
