Hi,

The WW2 Index record for Athol Henry Arthur COX shows that he enlisted in the field in Queensland on 30th July 1942 which indicates that he transferred from the Militia to the AIF while serving in Queensland and was allocated service number VX 109179.  Although, I cannot find a Militia/CMF service number for Athol.

There are a number of items on TROVE http://trove.nla.gov.au/newspaper/ relating to Athol in Gippsland.  He was a treasure of the local church, member of a lodge and a temperance movement.

Just found this and doesn't seem to match the OP's info about service in Malta :-\

Staff Sergeant Athol Cox was born 1910's, in Barinsdale.  He attended school in Sale and was in Seymour when he heard war was declared.

Athol served for 2 years part-time C.M.F. from 1939-41, and full-time service with the C.M.F. from October 1941 to August 1942  Then he served full-time with the A.I.F. from August 1942-May 1946

Athol was in the 37th Australian Infantry Battalion.  He was in the 8th Australian Movement Control and the Australian Army Pay Corps.  Athol saw service in Australia and New Guinea where he landed at Milne Bay, went to Lae and Buna with the Aus Movement Control based at Port Moresby.  Most of the time was spent flying in connection with pay records.

After the war Athol worked in the Anglican Diocese of Gippsland, at Sale where he was ordained as a priest at Nowa Nowa, Lake Tyers and Bairnsdale Parish.  Athol Cox lives in Paynesville with his wife, where they bought a home.
