please help me to read this
« on: Sunday 25 February 18 12:47 GMT (UK) »
I have finally found a document showing my Fathers time in the Australian Navy..

Most of which is legible... but  there is some writing that I think could be what I am searching for and it is so faint that I can hardly read it --   I am sure it explains certain things or may help with the explanation..

So if anyone has better eyes - can they please read it.. for me ?

It is just the part on the RIGHT hand side.   a Blocked paragraph of information... I think.
x

thanks

xin

Under Character:

Under Remarks
Ex R.N. recruited in U.K.
R.N. Service

L.A.F. (L) 22.7.41 – 25.9.41
L.A.F. (D/F) 26.9.41 – 31.3.42
Ldg Radio Mech 1.4.42 – 21.7.42
P.O. [?Petty Officer] Radio Mech (A/R) 22.7.42 – 20.12.45
           Released class A
R.N. & R.A.N. S/cs returned to HMAS Sydney [next bit too faint] Dec 50  464/24/??
Wife embarked from U.K. per Maloja / Maloya 23/5/51   121153/?/51
Rated A/L R.E.M.(Air) (Prov) [?Provisional] 18 Oct 50
To undergo ?conversion? course to U/T and qualify before he can be confirmed on/in rating

FREE discharge approved 4019/124/449  20/11/53
Free 30.11.53  ASIO312/668

There were a couple of other sets of numbers, but I think these are all just citing relevant standing orders/ordinances relating to his ratings.  Though the last one starting ASIO is interesting - sounds like a clearance from Australian Security Intelligence ??

I read all that as he started as an Air Fitter in RN, progressed to Leading Air Fitter, then became a Radio Mechanic and a Petty Officer Radio Mechanic, all while in RN.
Doesn't seem to say what he did in the RAN ??
Maybe if Seaweed sees your query, he can elaborate / correct for you?

Thank you :)

thats lovely and helpful.

Its a shame so much is so faint..

xin

just having another look at it with your words.. and see if I can understand.

I know that during my fathers time in the Australian Navy - he was allowed to bring my Sister and I back to the UK on a Naval Ship.. and I wondered if there was a mention of that..  I think it was the Asturias.

I have tweaked the faint writing in the right column as best I can.  The third line seems to read:
....... two children ....... at his own expense
Hopefully, someone with better skills and eyesight can crack it!

To undergo ?conversion? course to U/T and qualify before he can be confirmed on/in rating

Hello

I can just see a poor W before the weak slash line.

U/T usually means 'under training' and that wouldn't make sense in the sentence.

To undergo conversion course to W/T and qualify before he can be confirmed [   ] rating.

 -----------

Originally an Air Fitter (L)
[Electrician, trained to work on Naval aircraft]

L. A. F. (L) - Leading Air Fitter, Electrical.

(D/F) was usually Direction Finding by using a rotating aerial in an aircraft, or on land, or on a sea vessel, to get the direction of another wireless transmitter aerial, either at a land wireless station, or in an aircraft, or sea vessel (crudely put).

In your case (D/F) was probably the same and how he went on to become involved with the Radio Mechanic work.

Radio Mechanic (Repairer / Fitter / Installer), to a Wireless Telegraphy / Telegraphist (Wireless Operator), who could obviously perform both roles.

John Sutherland looks to have began in the Royal Navy trained to work on Aircraft electrical and then later in the Royal Australian Navy.

Air Fitter (L)
In 1942 I completed my apprenticeship and was given the rank of Air Fitter (L) (the “L” stood for “electrical”) and went to HQ at Leigh-on-Solent, where I was allocated to HMS Siskin at Gosport.  HMS Siskin was a shore base, not a sea-going ship.  My job was mostly inspecting aircraft.

Yep at his own expense .. I agree with that.. and it is part of the information that I really needed...to confirm.

Is it good to read these things -- I am not sure..    :-\

the wonderful information - regarding his service and how he worked hard up the ranks and then was held back... all adds up..... now..

thanks all much appreciated.
