Two adoptees
« on: Sunday 25 February 18 15:01 GMT (UK) »
Hi, I have 2 children Hugh Allen born Circa 1878 (from 1881 census he was aged 3) and rightly or wrongly his sister Mary born 1881. (2 months age on census.)
I say rightly or wrongly as on the same census she has the surname Campbell.
Both children are stated as adopted, they then both take the surname Campbell and on Hughs wedding certificate he States his parents as Robert Campbell and Janet Wilson. He also uses Allen as his middle name.( Robert and Janet being adoptive parents.)
On the 1911 census it states the Campbell's had one child, that was their daughter Isabella, that is why I made the assumption about Mary.
Hugh and Mary's birthplace in 1881 both born Glasgow, 1891 Kirkintilloch (where they lived from 1881)
1901 Hughes given birthplace Glasgow and Mary's is  Hamilton.1911 Hugh Glasgow
I don't want any information on the Campbell's but the parentage of Hugh and Mary, I have tried variations on Sp, family search and Ancestry and cannot find anything viable.Thank you.

have you checked siblings of Robert and Janet to see if any of them had illegitimate children or even Robert or Janet  or had died as well as their spouse leaving the children orphans

Hi Wendy, yes I checked  the siblings I know about.
Janet was easier as was born in Scotland, Robert from Ireland.I know that he had two brothers who came with him and have checked their families but he could have had any amount of brothers and sisters that I don't know about ;D

Have you checked the surname "Allan". There's a "Mary Allan" born Hamilton, 1880 and a few of Hugh Allan born 1878 to 1880 in the Glasgow region.

Noticed on the 1901 census Mary has the middle initial of R possibly a clue to her surname and they also have another son Robert b 1884 do you what happened to these 2 may offer clues

Although all 3 children maybe not related to each other or Robert and Janet and you could be looking for a needle in a haystack

Hi Wendy, Robert born 1884 is their daughter Isabellas son, my great grandfather.
I also looked at the R and checked out the Mary's born 1881 but couldn't match any of them with a match for a Hugh.
Been searching now for several years and just keep hoping that something will turn up.Thanks.

Mary and Hugh may not be brother and sister just 2 orphans from different families taken in by the Campbells

A thought have you checked the parish records for Poor relief outside chance there maybe something there
