Planes 1940/1945 Air Raid on Germany
« on: Sunday 25 February 18 16:41 GMT (UK) »
Written on the back of this photo (my father's writing) Air Raid on Germany. No date and, possibly Brighton as he was there between 1940/1945.

Difficult to tell for sure from the distance and quality.  RAF only had 3 four engine bombers in the war.  The single tail plane indicates they are not Avro Lancaster's  or  Halifax's bombers so from an RAF view point that leaves the Short Sterling.  Only thing is of course they could be American B-17 Flying fortress's

I think that they are Boeing B17 bombers and this would narrow the date to probably 1944.

Cheers

Interesting information. Unfortunately not the best photograph.

Thank you.

Thank you for that, will go for the  Boeing B17 bombers. The date would also fit in with my father being in Brighton in 1944. He was also in the Home Guard.

RAF Bomber Command operated a squadron of B17's in 1941. The USAAF deployed B17 squadrons in the UK from mid-1942.

That is very interesting - my father was in the Home Guard when in Brighton 1940/1943.

Many thanks

Close formation and daylight so likely to be USAAF.
