EVEREST and GURR of Westham/Hastings/Chiddingly
« on: Monday 26 February 18 16:46 GMT (UK) »
My 3 x Great grandparents were William EVEREST and Harriet GURR. They married on 13 September 1807 in St Nicholas Church, Pevensey, Sussex..

They appear on the 1841 census in St Leonards.
By 1851 William has died and Harriet appears on the census as a widow aged 62 from Westham and then on the 1871 census she is listed as 83 from Westham. She dies in Oct 1877 aged 90.
I cannot find her in 1861 census.

This gives her date of birth as roughly 1787/8/9.

I have found through Ancestry transcription of FHL parish records the baptism of a Harriot GURR in Chiddingly, Sussex on the 24 May 1790 (with a DOB of 21 Feb 1790). Father John GURR, mother Mary.

Does anyone else recognise this Harriot GURR as part of their family tree so that I can disount her from my own.

Christine,

Thanks. I am sure it must be. I do not have subs to the census's at the mo and did the original research ages ago so perhaps it was not covered at the time.

She was Charwoman in 1851 and Lodging House keeper in 1871

Thanks very much.

You can see the 1807 Pevensey marriage on FamilySearch (need to be logged in)

Details of a 1848 settlement examination and order of removal on The Keep
Harriet Everest of St Mary Magdalen Hastings (to Westham)

Edward Coppard of Westham is mentioned - once upon a time the Everests rented a house and garden from him.
In 1841 an Edwd Coppard in Westham had two Everests living with him - William and Harriet, both aged a rounded 25.

Don't know if there's any connection (probably not!)
5 Feb 1788 in Westham, Richard Gurr, widower, married John(!) Ann Coppard (of the parish).
Can't see the original record.
Following that marriage, there were some baptisms in Pevensey to a Richard and Ann Gurr, appx 1790-1802 (but don't seem to include a Harriet)

Edward Coppard of Westham left a will, proved 30 November 1846 in the Archdeaconry of Lewes
Names as executors his wife Ester Coppard and nephew Edward Gurr of Pevensey
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-DTZQ-RN1?i=350&cat=685691

down the page
"divide equally between ?? and the children of John Ann Gurr"

So there is a Gurr connection, plus William and Harriet Everest in 1841

There's a baptism indexed at Westham,  20 October 1811
William Turner Everest
born 29 August 1811
parents Wm + Ht

A marriage
Sep 1846 Eastbourne 7 478
Dunk, Harriet
Everest, William Turner
Census returns say he was born in Westham

Was that the lady with him in 1841, or was it his sister?

A death in June qtr 1883, Hailsham 2b 62
Everest, William Furner
age 72

The will of another Edward Coppard of Westham!
Proved 17 January 1799 at Lewes
Wife is Ann.
This Edward appears to be the father of the Edward already mentioned, and he has a daughter John Ann, the wife of Richard Gurr.

Quote from the will
"And after the decease of my Daughter John Ann Gurr I give and bequeath the aforesaid Chest of Drawers to my Granddaughter Harriot Gurr"

You can see it here (need to be logged in again)

Thanks for all the interest Jon but,

this William EVEREST is a son of my William. The Harriet is Harriet DUNK. The Coppards are a bit of a red Herring in  finding the origins of my 3 x Great Grand mother I'm afraid.
