Medical history

This is the medical history section of my GG-grandfather's military record. He was a farrier sergeant in the 4th Dragoon Guards and legend has it that he received a blow to his crown jewels from a horse's foot that put an end to his career. That "orchitis" and "accident" are the clearest words here would suggest there's substance to the story.

I've manipulated the image to put the relevant entry next to the headings.

I'm just curious what's written underneath "orchitis" and what the treatment was. Looks like "leech testimony"!

Leech Antimony?

According to the mighty Wikky: "Some antimony compounds were used as medicines to kill protozoans. The antimony pill was a chunk of antimony that was supposed to heal diseases. It is used in medicines for pets."

(protozoans can be parasites, but my knowledge of medicine is very limited).

Poor man. What an end to his career. I dread to think what the leech was doing given the affected area. Antimony makes sense too - I hadn't noticed the similarity to the A in Accident.

I'd agree with Philip and Gadget

Leeches presumably used to contain the swelling caused by the bruising.  What a 'cure' !!

After reading the screed on Antimony, can't see why they would have given him that.

All in all, a most unpleasant time, poor chap!
