Union Workhouse, Basford - Records
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 18:44 GMT (UK) »
I received a birth certificate from the GRO this week recording the illegitimate birth of a baby boy in July 1871. The birth was registered by Workhouse Master William Dean.  There is very little other detail on the registration - no father's name; no occupation; no place of origin.

I have not found a convincing entry for the mother in the UK 1881 census but believe she came from the South Normanton area of Derbyshire. There was a 63 year old widower collier of the same surname and from the same area in residence at the Workhouse in 1881 though - perhaps her grandfather.

I would appreciate any information about the records for the Workhouse around this time: admissions, discharges, medical and maternity records etc.  My internet searches to date have led me to the Enquiry and Research Services of Nottinghamshore County Council which suggests that archive enquiries can be made by email. However clicking on the link to "Research Services" lead to a  "Sorry that page doesn't exist" message.

Any thoughts or suggestions would be helpful.

Have you checked baptisms on NFHS? Sometimes it has a baptism that is not available on Free reg , Family Search or Ancestry. If you would like to give a name I can check for you. There are 5 single women in Basford who baptised children in 1871.
