St Pancras Bassam birth not on the GRO
« on: Tuesday 27 February 18 21:52 GMT (UK) »
Hello I'd love some help!

I have spent hours trying to unravel various branches of the Bassam family in St Pancras, Southwark and Essex. I am particularly interested in William Edward Bassam who was born on Nov 22nd 1881, and died in WWI. He was one of 11 or 12 children. Weirdly I have been able to locate all of the others on the GRO, their mother's maiden name was Adams and they married in 1874 (Sarah Elizabeth) but not his.

The family is ultra confusing, they all have the same names. William's own father (if I'm correct) was usually known as James William, but appeared as Charles William on William's birth cert, and Edward William on one of his son's marriage cert, although that was after he died and I guess they may have forgotten, if William for example was the name he was known by.

So should I be concerned that William Edward doesn't seem to appear on the GRO, or is it not unheard of that a name has been missed off by mistake?

Any thoughts would be very, very welcome!
Many thanks

Is this not him?

Mar 1882 Pancras
Bassam William Edward

from free bmd haven't checked GRO yet  :)

Found it on the GRO under BAWSAM.  Have to be a bit creative with the spellings!
Hinchliffe - Huddersfield Wiltshire
Burroughs - Arlingham Glos
Pick - Frocester Glos

while I'm here....

another big mystery for me in this family is why William Edward was living in Herne Hill (Hawarden Grove) in 1911 as a boarder. He was working as a boot repairer manager, but his main family were all in St Pancras. There is another Bassam family that moved from Essex and eventually settled around Medlar St in Camberwell, the home of grandparents George and Maria Bassam who helped to bring up their grandchildren for Edgar and Charlotte who ran pubs. There is also another branch in Deptford which i think is connected, they were all in the oil trade. I would love to be able to link William Edward to George and Maria, but I fear this might be asking too much of the sources. But if anyone has any ideas, I'd love to hear them.

Many many thanks!
Emma

He would have been nearly 30 years old in 1911 maybe he was living close to his work or felt it was time to leave home  ;D
