Searching for Tate family from Northumberland
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 09:07 GMT (UK) »
Hello. I have collected various pieces of information about my ancestor Gmelin Tate (born c. 1811) who says in the censuses that he was born in Guizance/Guyzon in Northumberland. As His father, William, is recorded as a carpenter and weaver. There is no actual information about Gmelin before his marriage. After that there is a full record through censuses and even a notification that Gmelin was a shoemaker and managed a shop in an area of Sunderland.

I would like to be able to confirm that William really is his father and who his mother is. Most of my Tate relatives are from Yorkshire and I am trying to find the link between this branch of the family and my Yorkshire branch. I've reached a brick wall at Family Search and do not pay money to Ancestry.

The 1844 marriage:  https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:NXPF-WHS

1841 census: https://familysearch.org/ark:/61903/1:1:MQBF-GF2  (not obviously with birth family)

Track the 1841 females to see if they are likely to be sisters of Gmelin?

Guyzance was in Shilbottle Parish http://www.genuki.org.uk/big/eng/NBL/Shilbottle

Have you trawled through Shilbottle baptisms to see if he's there? Bishops Transcripts here http://www.rootschat.com/links/01lo1/

Gmelin is an interesting character.  I have searched through baptismal records in the areas surrounding where he lived and there is nothing.  He magically appeared out of nowhere just prior to his wedding, raised a family, and after his wife, Mary Ann, died he disappeared again.  I have a copy of his marriage banns and a listing of all of his children; however, nothing from his early life.

I have a relative in Selby, Yorkshire (John Tate) who was born in 1795 and could be Gmelin's uncle; however, I cannot find any information about Gmelin's father, William Tate.  I know there are many Tate families in northern England, so they might not be related at all; however, it is worth a try.

It's possible that this is his death year.

There's a marriage, May 1807, Holy Island
William Tait of Shilbottle and Isable Wilson of Holy Island

On the BT it looks like 1st May to me, but indexed on FamilySearch as 31st May
https://www.familysearch.org/ark:/61903/3:1:S3HY-68J9-ZM5?i=54&cc=1309819&cat=1820857

FamilySearch also has William Tate and Isabella Wilson, married 17 May 1807, Shilbottle
From microfilm 991788, which is Shilbottle PRs, doesn't say it includes banns.
The BT for 1807 is not available.

Strange! But in any case this may not be the William you are looking for.

EDIT There might be banns records after all - 17 May 1807 was a Sunday.

I found that his wife, Mary Ann, was born in 1826 and died in 1873.
