Help with surname, Walter?
« on: Wednesday 28 February 18 23:00 GMT (UK) »
Hi everyone,

Came across this earlier, can't quite figure it out. The bride in question is a spinster so I need this surname. Looks something like Walter? Also, does 'supposed to be' mean she was 'base born' and wasn't sure of her real father? (Marriage is of Catherine Burrows, Spinster, to Thomas Cleveland, Batchelor. Rothwell, Northamptonshire, 1843.)

Many thanks

I think it says "supposed to be Henry Walker deceased"

it would mean she was illegit but Henry was her father possibly named by her mother

In my opinion the marriage residence is not always the place of birth. Never forget Workhouse and overseers accounts records of birth

Thank you everyone :)

I have indeed found a Henry Walker who died in 1837 in Kettering. Seems very likely it's him. Now to find Catherine's maiden name!

Didn't you say her surname was Burrows?

Yeah ... realised my mistake after I wrote that. Having seen her father's surname was different to hers I completely forgot she was registered as a spinster and spent about 30 minutes looking for a previous marriage for her.  :-[
