The names involved are hardly rare for that era and county, but just to note that there was a Church of Ireland baptism on 31 March 1822 for a son William Montgomery for parents listed as George Montgomery and Jane Montgomery, the  address / location was 'Derriheen'.

I imagine that meant the townland of Derryheen just southwest of Butlersbridge:
https://www.townlands.ie/cavan/loughtee-upper/urney/cavan-rural/derryheen/
https://www.libraryireland.com/topog/D/Derryheen-Upper-Loughtee-Cavan.php

The tithe applotment books show a George and Thomas Montgomery listed against that townland in 1826 (part of the Farnham Estate):
http://titheapplotmentbooks.nationalarchives.ie/reels/tab//004587397/004587397_00181.pdf

There are several mentions of a George Montgomery in the following 'Farnham Papers', including a deed of surrender for Derryheen in 1835:
http://www.nli.ie/pdfs/mss%20lists/farnham2.pdf

A very lengthy article in the Meath People and Cavan and Westmeath Chronicle of 19 March 1859 carried an account of a meeting in Cavan Courthouse about land improvement, presided over by Sir Richard Griffiths and attended by several influential landowners - at that meeting, a George Montgomery was examined, he was described as an inspector on Lord Farnham's estate for nearly 18 years and was able to advise the meeting on the nature and value of the land, eg. in relation to drainage / flooding.

Griffith's Valuation has several entries that might be relevant, but as I said, the name is hardly rare.  All very speculative stuff, but for you to note regarding other possible leads online or until you can rule it out.

Here are some additional facts
Born abt 1823 Cavan
1835 ish educated at Coote Hill
1842 Emigrated to Australia to do survey work with Sir Thomas Mitchell
1848 Arrived NZ
1849-1852 California
1853 married Harriet Louise Pilkington
Raised 10 children including my Great Grandfather Theodore Arthur Montgomery born 1875 and their grandson Percy ( William Bartley Jnrs son)
1907 Died

I  have lots of information on William once he arrived in NZ. That includes information from Papers Past - obituary, immigration documents, photos, will, years and years of documents for a Syndicate that owned a Samoan Plantation. His death certificate. He and his wife owned pubs in Auckland and rather Coromandel and also large pieces of the Te Atatu peninsular.

He was a surveyor so if anyone knows where I could find ieducational information in Ireland that would be great.

Along with any other Irish leads. I’ll take a look at the info provided on George and Jane Montgomery.

George was born in Tiranny, County Monaghan, Ireland

There may not be any records about his education in Ireland.

One of my husband's relatives (born in 1820s) worked at surveying local farms (we have the original map he did for our farm) but was actually a teacher in the local school and had no formal training to become a surveyor.
Away sorting out DNA matches... I may be gone for some time many years!
