What a difficult family to find

I cannot find the Duncans in 1861
but possibly Robert was married to an Emily at that time

there is a death reg Emily Duncan age 36 Jun qtr 1870 West Bromwich 6b 433

Possibly the children -or some of them used their middle names
You need to check on GRO for mother's maiden names

1861 there is Thomas Duncan age 16 b Coventry
I think this could bebirth reg of Robert and Emily's 1st child
Thomas Duncan Jun qtr 1854 Coventry 6b402
but it seems he died Sept qtr 1854 Coventry

2nd child could be Walter Thomas Duncan Dec qtr 1855 Coventry 6d 348
I think this is the child known as Thomas age 16 in 1871

next is Elizabeth Ann Duncan birth reg Dec qtr 1857 Coventry 6d 392
This could be Elizabeth age 13 in 1871

next is Robert Willy Charles birth reg Sept qtr 1861coventry 6d 404
this may be William Duncan age 11 in 1871

next Emily Kate birth reg Sept 1864 Coventry 6d 407
think this is Kate age 7 in 1871

next Frances Janet Duncan birth reg Sept 1866 6d 423
she died Sept qtr 1866 age ) Sept qtr 1867 -so she didn't quite make her 1st birthday

the next child
Frances Janet Duncan birth Sept 1868 West brom 6b 705
this could be Janet age 2 in 1871 -p.o.b. given as Coventry but West Brom on later census

it looks like these are the children of Robert and Emily
I haven't found baptisms

Hi Suz,

I have looked at all the Names and dates you found and am very happy to agree with your findings,
it all makes sense, Even the complicated Story about Frances Janet Duncan/Carter
She says in the 1901 census P.O.B scotland, but that was where her father was born, and like you said in the 1911 census she says P.O.B West bromwich and also says shes Scotish.
I wonder if she was married before and widowed , her daughter Mary ann and son Thomas robert both Duncan's gone to her maiden name.

Yes very sad tale of loss for Jessie and Her Mother Elizabeth (Betsy)and Robert
So Jessie had no full siblings but 5 half brothers and sisters.
Yes i agree that most of the time families used their second names As did Robert The Father his name was Thomas Robert Duncan
i would love to know where He came from and his ancesters, but ive hit a wall ,theres so many Robert Duncans in Scotland ,i have no idea about his ancesters.
But anyway Thankyou for all your help, i do understand More about Jessie Duncan My Great grand mother now, Elsie her daughter my gran, i await the arrival of her birth certificate and hopefully the name of her true father
kind regards
thanks again
Brian

It doesn't seem like Frances Janet was previously married - More likely Mary Ann and Thomas were born out of wedlock

Jessie did have full siblings -sadly none of them survived infancy

Don't be disappointed if Jessie's father is not named on the birth certificate - he would have to be present when the birth was registered for him to be named - sometimes the father of an illegitimate child put his name on the baptism record - sometimes the mother claimed off the father  and if so there would be a bastardy order. Who does jessie name her father on her marriage cert?

Hi Suz
I know, i'm expecting it not to have the Fathers name on it, and where i go from there i dont know, just like lots of other people in the same position .But you never know.
I dont have Jessie's Marriage certificate -should i try to get it?
Thanks
