Hi
I think this is probably coincidence and I have it all wrong,  but there is an Heims family living in Eldon Street Liverpool in 1871   Jacob and Dora F  Heims from Germany.
They are at a different address in 1881 but children include Dora b1872(registered as Hime mmn Funhoff), Mary 1877 and John 1879.
I think Dora 1872 married Charles James Quinlan, in 1939 she appears to be living at 22,Eldon Road, Liverpool.
I wonder if Hines could be a derivation of Heims.

I'm confused, are we looking for a John Hines who had descendants or John Barney Hines who did not marry and who lied about his age and was indeed born in Liverpool in 1873

I am confused too LizzieL.  Hopefully ALAMO2008 will clarify it for us  ;D

He had no descendants this is research into a famous person not someone's own family history research. As you can see from my thread on Liverpool & SW Lancs FHS forum it's a tricky one and is certainly a brickwall.

I am trying to research the early life of a John Hines apparently born Liverpool 1873 of Irish Parentage, he died in Australia in 1958

OP doesn't say that the John Hines he/she is researching is an ancestor.
The information given is remarkably similar to that quoted in the Wikipedia article and others
https://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/John_Hines_(Australian_soldier)

Berks / Oxon: Eltham, Annetts, Wiltshire (surname not county), Hawkins, Pembroke, Partridge
Dorset / Hants: Derham, Stride, Purkiss, Sibley
Yorkshire: Pottage, Carr, Blackburn, Depledge
Sussex: Goodyer, Christopher, Trevatt
Lanark: Scott (soldier went to Jersey CI)
Jersey: Fowler, Huelin, Scott

Re the Heims family  :-\

There is a John Heim with birthdate 12th October 1876 signed up 1896 to Navy. He has some distinguishing marks on his record though which are not on that Australian one. He was discharged as ‘objectionable’  ???

David and Mary Thompson and children are at 11 Eldon Place, Liverpool.

Cathy,
I think you have found a very likely family. Mary, though, isn’t at that address later and has possibly remarried  :-\
