ShaunJ, thanks for the link to the book.  I'll file that 24 July 1766 commission date for use with Sir James Pettigrew of Co. Tyrone.  Again, he is not the grandfather of Rev. Wm. Pettigrew.  It's looking like a long shot about finding any service info for Rev. Pettigrew's grandfather James.  Thanks for trying.

Sam Barry, I really appreciate your providing the full civil registration record for the marriage of Rev. WJ Pettigrew.  I did not have access to it.  That record confirms his father as Robert.  Excellent.

I saw this suggestion of a family story of a connection between the Drumraw and Crilly Pettigrew families - this from that same letter, apparently:

"My connection with the Crilly family rests only on the claim of my father to that effect; as no intercourse between them and us ever existed and no counting of kinship, of course....We were in humble, though independent circumstances; and they reported to be rich. Our sense of delicacy, therefore, prevented acquaintance....Our designation for them was 'Our rich cousins at Crilly'"

Yes, that is part of the same 1862 letter by Rev. Wm. J. Pettigrew.

The Pettigrews of Crilly House, Co. Tyrone are very well-documented.  There is no doubt that James Pettigrew of the 10th Regiment of Foot, British Army, who was wounded in the American Revolution, is the same as Sir James Pettigrew, heir to Crilly House.  In 1787, he died in Jamaica, still in the army, and was buried there.  Crilly House passed to his brother.

As Rev. Wm. Pettigrew wrote, his family in Drumra, Co. Down, did not have contact with the Pettigrews of Crilly House.  Going back far enough, into Scotland, it is likely there was a common ancestor to both families.
