They married 23 Feb 1851 Cairnbulg
They had 4 children Jane 1851 - 1922,Eliza Hay 1856-1920 William 1858, Elizabeth 1862
But in 1851 census there is Margaret 15, Ann 12, Catherine 9, Robert 6
1861 Catherine 20, Jane 7, Eliza,7, William 4
So it seems Robert must have been married before maybe 1835ish
Can't seem to find a marriage?

There is this possible entry in 1841:

Elizabeth BUCHAN 30                       
Margaret BUCHAN 5                       
Ann BUCHAN 2                
Ann DUTHIE 15 Female Servant

There are two marriage/banns entries in Rathen for a Robert Buchan marrying an Elizabeth. The surname for bride in each is Duthie. Given the gap in years, likely two different couples:

marriage:28 April 1831 Rathen
marriage:29 October 1843 Rathen

Likely the second couple above are still having children in Rathen up to 1863, going by the birth index on Family Search.

No relationships normally included in the 1841 census. Could be the house servant in the house in 1841, Ann Duthie is family to Elizabeth.

Marriage and death regs for Robert's children with first wife will let you confirm his first wife's name.

Think I've got a marriage for Margaret Buchan b 14 Sep 1835 d 1901 she Married Robert Duthie 8 Nov 1855 Fraserburgh went in for cert parents Robert Buchan & Elizabeth Duthie will try and get other family

Thank you MonicaL, I'm just beginning to recheck my family line which could take some time!  It's so easy to digress from the original family into relatives of families married into, its a minefield.
